The Summit Tor of Slieve
Bearnagh with Rime ice on the Mourne Wall
This unusual atmospheric phenomenom is known as the 'Brocken
Spectre'.
The "spectre" occurs when the sun shines from
behind a person casting a shadow onto the mist. The light projects the
shadow forward through the mist, often in an odd triangular shape with a
spectrum halo.
This collection of images are the result of a visit to
Slieve Bearnagh on a cold December day in the Mountains of Mourne. With
winter routes in mind I headed for a water course near Hare's Gap that had
been climbed by friends two days previously and was completely frozen. To my
surprise it was still in good nick and I climbed it and continued on up to
the Summit Tor. Here I climbed Work Party an interesting mixed route that
was just about to thaw though thankfully escapes the morning sun. The
scenery was awesome.
